Carnival Cruise Lines- a Brief History!

With 33 years of fun under its belt, it is perhaps fitting that we provide a brief Carnival Cruise Lines History. Having had a shaky start, Carnival has progressed, expanded, and grown into the largest cruise line in the world by carrying more cruise passengers than any other cruise line.

With a converted transatlantic ocean liner, Ted Arison built on his dream of Carnival Cruises providing not only the very rich, but average earners as well, the opportunity to enjoy a cruise vacation. Today, the Carnival "Funships" serve all levels of wage-earners in virtually all walks of life. The following chronology details the history of Carnival Cruise Lines' progression.

1972- Carnival's first ship the TSS Mardi Gras (see Ocean Cruises and Ocean Liners for the story) starts things off with a maiden voyage. She runs aground on a sandbar outside the port of Miami.

1975- The Empress of Britain (see note above) is purchased by Carnival and becomes TSS Carnivale.

1982- The debut of the new Carnival Cruise ship Tropicale marks the beginning of an industry wide cruise ship building boom.

1984- Carnival becomes the first cruise line to advertise on network television. The starring company spokesperson? Cathy Lee Gifford (then Johnson).

1985- The 46,053-ton Carnival Holiday debuts.

1986- Carnival launches the 47,262-ton Jubilee.

1987 - Carnival Celebration enters service at 47,262-tons.

Carnival earns the distinction of the "Most Popular Cruise Line in the World" carrying more passengers than any other cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Lines raises about $400 million for expansion, being offered on Wall Street (later to become Carnival Corporation & plc)

1990- The first of eight 70,367-ton fantasy-class cruise ship enters service as the Carnival Fantasy. This cruise ship is the first new ship ever placed on a three and four day Bahamas Cruise program from Miami.

1991- Carnival launches the 70,367-ton Ectasy.

!993- Carnival Cruises introduces their third new superliner, Sensation.

1994- Carnival debuts the Fascination another fantasy-class ship.

Carnival's parent company was renamed to Carnival Corporation to distinguish between the flagship brand and the parent. Later, following the combination with P&O Princess Cruises, The world's largest cruise vacation group is renamed Carnival Corp. & plc.

1995- Another fantasy-class ship enters service - Carnival's Imagination.

1996- The sixth Carnival fantasy-class superliner Inspiration enters service.

Carnival Cruises debuts its first passenger vessel to exceed 100,000-tons the Carnival Destiny. At 101,353-tons, Destiny was, at that time, the largest cruise ship in the world.

1998- The seventh fanstasy-class ship the Elation was introduces by Carnival Cruise Lines being the first new cruise ship to be deployed on the west coast.

Carnival enters into service its eighth fantasy class cruise ship the Paradise.

1999- The second destiny-class ship the Carnival Triumph debuts at 102,000-tons.

2000- Carnival Victory is launches as the third destiny-class cruise ship.

2001- A new class of ship is introduced by Carnival - the spirit -class. The 88,500-ton Carnival Spirit debuts as the first new "Funship" to be positioned in the Alaska and Hawaii markets.

2002- Carnival Pride is launched as the second spirit-class cruise ship.

Carnival Legend enters service as the third spirit-class cruise ship.

Carnival Conquest, at 110,000-tons, becomes the largest "Funship" to be constructed and enters service.

2003- The second conquest-class cruise ship, Carnival Glory, enters service, year-round out of Port Canaveral as the largest "Funship" based in that port.

2004- The fourth spirit-class cruise ship, Carnival Miracle, begins a series of 12 voyages from Jacksonville as the first "Funship" to sail from that port.

Carnival Valor, the third conquest-class cruise ship, begins service out of Miami being the largest "Funship" based there.

2005- Carnival Liberty is set to debut in July as Carnival's fourth conquest-class ship, operating as the first-ever Mediterranean cruise for Carnival Cruise Lines.

2007- February of 2007 is the date set for the debut of the fifth of Carnival's conquest-class cruise ship, the Carnival Freedom.
